I recently read an article about people turning to writers for help with their wedding speeches ... and coughing up $500 or more for this help. The article also insinuated that the message of the speech was then coming from someone other than the person giving the speech.
I'm well aware of people turning to help for their wedding speeches, because I've been lending them a hand with this since 2002. And I know how much money is poured into weddings, even for those in the wedding party. So no need to tack on another huge bill.
That's why my custom speech help has always been substantially less than $500. I don't live in New York City like some writers. I have little overhead, and I've refined my process in order to help efficiently without the sky high rates.
Now let's address that insinuation: I can't say how all writers work with their clients, but I imagine most are similar to me in the sense of finding out what the client wants to say. Finding out what their words are. I hope most writers do this.
In any case, I have a detailed form that my clients either fill out, or I fill out for them while having a conversation by phone. This way, I get to know them, their relationship with the people getting married, their personal stories with those people, and the couple as well. I work hard to make sure each speech comes from the client, not from me.
And I don't just do that with a form. I do that with unlimited revisions within the time available before the wedding. While clients are usually pretty excited about my first drafts, I work with them until they feel their voice and message are in the speech. They can add to, subtract from, change, or request that I change any portion of the speech.
This is why I've been blessed to gather so many unsolicited testimonials over the years, and what shows up on my site is just a sample. Happy clients because I wouldn't have it any other way. I can't see helping someone express themselves unless I've taken the time to make sure they're delighted with every word.
